Our Story

Melbourne’s Backyard Honey beekeepers, Peter and Jane Dyer, realised that while many people dreamed of having beehives and harvesting their own pure raw unheated honey they often did not have the time or apiary experience required. Inspired by this, Peter and Jane pursued their beekeeping passion and developed an innovative urban apiary service, Backyard Honey.

Backyard Honey's purpose is to provide city dwellers with the skills and equipment necessary to host bee hives and obtain pure local honey from their own backyards. The Backyard Honey ethos is simply to provide an effective and efficient service to ensure sustainable, healthy and mindful communities.

Today, Backyard Honey continues to grow and work towards ensuring urban communities maintain viable and healthy populations of urban bees.

Backyard Honey products are Kosher Australia approved.

No antibiotics or chemicals are used.

Our Process

Backyard Honey is hand-harvested, cold extracted, unpasteurised and brim with all the natural nutritional goodness of Australian nectars and pollens. Backyard Honey retains all the beneficial nutritional, pro-biotic, antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-fungal and medicinal properties often lost in pasteurised commercial honey. Our honey is only harvested when ripe, and our beehives are not moved to chase the nectar. They remain in situ so the bees can hibernate, rest and rejuvenate over-winter in a natural seasonal rhythm.

Each Backyard Honey harvest’s colour, smell and consistency may be a little different as the foraging of bees is neither within the apiarist’s control nor inclination. Some harvests may crystallise. This is a natural process and simply indicates the bees have gathered pollens more likely to turn the honey solid. If you prefer a liquid honey, gently warm crystallised honey on a sunny windowsill or in a warm bowl of water, remembering that temperatures higher than 40°C will reduce the honey’s therapeutic properties.

Our Hives

Backyard Honey supports responsible local urban bee keeping by positively increasing populations of healthy local bees.

Backyard Honey's beehives are clean, sound and disease free. Our apiarist maintains strong colonies of healthy robust bees. Backyard Honey’s bee-keeping services enable clients to host hives in their own backyards to ensure the honey they produce is 100% raw, local and delicious.

The positive short term and long term benefits of increasing local populations of healthy bees is well documented. Backyard Honey bees pollinate the fruit and vegetables in our local gardens. In fact without bees we may not have access to over 30% of the natural foods (coffee, cheese, tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins etc) we currently consume.
